TCU firmly believes that in order to have successful collegiate careers, students must remain healthy. This is an update on the current status of the H1N1 vaccine on campus and the options available on this very important health issue. Because of manufacturing delays, the H1N1 vaccine continues to arrive in lesser-than-anticipated quantities in Texas. As of this date, no Texas college/university, including TCU, has received the vaccine.
However, Tarrant County Public Health Department has received a limited quantity of the vaccine, which is available to people in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s target groups: pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age, health-care and emergency medical services personnel, all people from 6 months through 24 years of age and people 25 through 64 years of age who have health conditions associated with a higher risk of medical complications from influenza.
Most TCU students fall into the target group by age and some by having existing health conditions; therefore the University wants each student to be aware of available options to receive the vaccination.
Tarrant County Public Health Department will hold a free H1N1 clinic November 24th at the Arlington Convention Center, 1200 Ballpark Way, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The clinic is free and open for people in the CDC’s target groups. No proof of condition is required.
Beginning Friday, November 20, 2009, vaccinations will be given on a walk-in basis at the county’s seven public health centers. No appointments are necessary. Each location is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but is closed for lunch from 1-2 p.m. For more information, call 2-1-1 or check the Tarrant County Public Health Web site at http://health.tarrantcounty.com.

***POSTPONED***
TCU is offering its remaining supply of seasonal flu vaccine free to students in a clinic at the Brown-Lupton Health Center November 21 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. December 3 from 5 - 7 p.m. The vaccine is available to the first 800 students who show their TCU ID. The Health Center will send the necessary forms via email before the clinic. These need to be filled out and brought to the event. The event marks the last opportunity of the year to receive a seasonal flu vaccine at TCU. The vaccine is also available Monday – Friday during regular business hours (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) at the Health Center.
If you are interested in receiving the seasonal flu shot, please make sure to wear a short-sleeved shirt as this will speed up the process. Everyone receiving a shot will be asked to fill out a form. As stated earlier, manufacturers of the vaccine encountered distribution challenges resulting in fewer doses earlier last month. TCU recently received more of its allotted over the past couple of weeks.
For more information on the flu, or updated information on the anticipated H1N1 vaccine, please visit www.tcu.edu/fluinfo.asp. For information on the clinic, please call 817-257-5266.
