What do I do if an employee reports a new medical condition for her/himself or a family member? What is my responsibility as a supervisor?

A supervisor’s first responsibility is to be empathetic and compassionate to their employee. Supervisors may ask if the condition will require absences from work, the expected duration of the illness/recovery, and if the employee has contacted HR for assistance.
Supervisors should contact HR and provide the employee’s name so HR can assist the employee with applying for FMLA, short-term disability, or other benefits to which the employee is eligible. HR will work with the employee and the supervisor keeping both informed of the process.
