An employee is requesting to work from home because of a medical condition, how do I respond?

Last Updated May 25, 2021

The best response is to refer the employee to Human Resources (hrfmla/ for more information. The Americans with Disability Association (ADA) allows employees to seek reasonable accommodations for a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Remote work is not generally considered a reasonable accommodation under ADA. HR will work with the employee, the supervisor, and the certifying health care provider to identify mutually acceptable reasonable accommodations – it is a collaborative and iterative process.
