In the News: Experts Weigh in On Black Anxiety in America
In light of continued racial tensions and police brutality, Black anxiety is rising, according to the Nov. 1 Associated Press article, Experts: Police Brutality, Racism Pushing Black Anxiety.
“Some experts say police brutality, the coronavirus pandemic that has taken disproportionate physical and financial tolls on Black people, and other issues around race have increased anxiety levels among African Americans,” summarized the story.
Frederick Gooding Jr., Ph.D., associate professor of African American Studies in the John V. Roach Honors College, offered his perspective about personal safety concerns as the country continues to struggle with social unrest. He noted that activists taking to the streets to maintain public political pressure for change are specifically concerned, “especially in the aftermath of Kyle Rittenhouse walking untouched in full view with an assault rifle AFTER shooting another civilian dead.”
