The 107th Session of the TCU House of Student Representatives unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing the above and beyond commitment of university staff to keep students safe, healthy and comfortable during winter storm Uri, which wreaked havoc across campus (and much of the country) with record-breaking snow, arctic temperatures and widespread power outages in February.

The decree was written by Kyle Atwood, a senior political science major, Student Government Association Class of 2021 representative and the host of “Open House,” the SGA’s official podcast.

“I was inspired to write it while observing the campus community come together to ensure the well-being of the student body under extraordinary circumstances,” Atwood said. “The image I have burned in my memory from that week is of housekeeping staff trudging through the snow, making sure the dorms remained sanitary. To say I was overcome with gratitude is an understatement.”

The proclamation acknowledges Student Affairs and Housing & Residence Life staff and volunteers for the availability of three meals a day, the TCU Recreation Center for opening its doors to students who needed a warm place to sleep or to charge their electronic devices, housekeeping staff for providing upkeep to residence halls and the facilities team for clearing walkways and quickly responding to maintenance needs.

“These cumulative efforts have allowed students to remain safe, healthy, and comfortable on campus, thus fostering a resilient academic environment,” the proclamation reads. “Therefore, let it be proclaimed by the House of Student Representatives at Texas Christian University:

That the Student Government Association express its sincerest gratitude on behalf of the student body for the sustained commitment of University staff to providing food, maintenance, and other services amid the 2021 winter storm.”

“I am so proud of SGA for advocating and supporting the workers that got our community through such a difficult time,” said Paige Shiring, a senior finance major and SGA president.
