The Atatiana Project will host a camp for about 15 children July 19-23 at Texas Christian University. The Fort Worth Report published an article about the camp, which focuses on the project’s purpose: exposing local students to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“I’ve been on a mission for a number of years to reach out to children of all ages to inspire their interest in math, engineering, science, technology, etc., as so many others did for me,” said Curtis Larsen, professor of professional practice in the College of Science & Engineering, “so I just couldn’t possibly think of saying ‘no’ to this opportunity when it presented itself.”

Emily Herzig, an instructor in the Department of Mathematics, is partnering with Larsen in the camp effort, helping students assemble a computer from a kit and teaching them how to program and use it.

Atatiana Jefferson, who herself graduated with a degree in biology, was killed in her home by a Fort Worth police officer in 2019. The Atatiana Project was established by her sister, Ashley Carr.
