The strength of a pillar is its base, or its foundation. To that end, TCU’s Pillar of Purple Award is based on some of TCU’s foundational values: strong academics, community service, campus involvement and, for its student-athletes, athletic achievement.

“The Pillar of Purple Award recognizes the totality of the student-athlete's commitment to excellence,” said Bob Leone, J. Vaughn and Evelyne H. Wilson Chair in Marketing and chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee (IAC).“Student-athletes have gradually learned about this award, now in its fourth year, and it has become something that they see as a significant recognition.”

The award is presented to at least one student-athlete from men’s sports and one from women’s sports. The latest recipients for 2021-2022 were Dominic DiNunzio (football), Madilyn Cole (volleyball) and Megan Morris (swimming and diving). Nominees must have junior or senior academic standing and have earned a varsity letter in their respective sport.

“The award also allows student-athletes to be recognized in their colleges, departments and across TCU for their academic achievements, highlighting the fact that many of our student-athletes are outstanding students,” added Leone.

Each year, nominations are made to the IAC by the athletic teams through their academic advisers, faculty, counselors and coaches. Nominees are responsible for a résumé, statement of accomplishments and references, which are then evaluated by the committee to ensure winners exemplify the highest standards of citizenship, character and courage.

“What makes the award unique is it is a recognition of the student-athlete’s academic achievements, leadership and community service – NOT athletic performance,” Leone said. “Ultimately, it recognizes their overall contributions to TCU and the community outside of TCU.”

In other words, Leone said, these individuals truly form the pillars of the TCU community.
