Dr. Vergine’s research focuses on the dynamics of power, the commingling of sacred and secular, and the interplay between central and peripheral musical cultures in medieval southern Italy through the examination of extant liturgical manuscripts from the region, with a particular focus on hymns for the Divine Office.

Bibiana Vergine received her Ph.D. in Musicology from Princeton University and her M.M. in Musicology from the University of Texas at Austin. She received her bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and a B.A. in the liberal arts honors program known as Plan II at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Vergine’s research focuses on the dynamics of power, the commingling of sacred and secular, and the interplay between central and peripheral musical cultures in medieval southern Italy through the examination of extant liturgical manuscripts from the region, with a particular focus on hymns for the Divine Office.
Dr. Vergine has conducted archival research and has presented at numerous conferences, including those of the International Congress in Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, MI, the International Musicological Society’s study group Cantus Planus, the Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference, and the American Musicological Society. Her publications include essays on the second tonary of the manuscript Montecassino 318, on a newly discovered codex from Salerno, Italy, and on the hymns of southern Italy. In addition to performance in piano for her undergraduate degree, Dr. Vergine has played violin in baroque and early music ensembles.
Prior to teaching at TCU, Dr. Vergine was a visiting lecturer in Musicology at the University of North Texas’s School of Music in 2023-2024. Dr. Vergine currently serves on the faculty of Texas Christian University as Adjunct Instructor of Musicology.
