Dr. Danielle LaPlace completed her Ph.D in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. She also holds a graduate certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Her dissertation “How We Accomplish this Work: Black Labor and U.S. Imperial Public Health in the Greater Caribbean, 1898-1934” examines public health as a site of racialization in the transnational historical context of early twentieth century U.S. imperial expansion across the Greater Caribbean. Centering gendered Black labor, it foregrounds undertheorized disability histories of the Global South and underscores racialized disability as intertwined with the objectives of empire. While completing her dissertation, Danielle won an American Association of University Women (AAUW) fellowship. She is passionate about mentoring, supporting girls of color through the SisterMentors program.
