About

Dr. Jeanette Velasco is a first-generation Mexican-American bass and contrabass trombonist from San Antonio, Texas. Her passion for music was inspired by her early exposure to bandas in Mexico and the joy they brought to their communities. While she enjoys performing a wide range of musical styles, she is especially committed to showcasing her cultural heritage through performance and expanding the presence of Latin American music within the trombone repertoire.

A sought-after international performer, educator, and clinician, Dr. Velasco has appeared throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia as a soloist, chamber musician, and masterclass presenter. Her educational journey began at The Boston Conservatory under the guidance of Angel Subero. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Performance from The University of Texas at Austin in 2016, studying with Dr. Nathaniel Brickens, and a Master of Music in Performance from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2018, where she studied with Ben van Dijk. In 2025, she completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Texas Christian University, where she served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant while studying with Dr. David Begnoche.

Dr. Velasco has earned recognition in numerous national and international competitions, including the Steven Zellmer Trombone Competition, the S.E. Shires Solo Competition at the Southeast Trombone Symposium, the American Trombone Workshop Solo and Quartet Competitions, the Big XII Trombone Conference Competition, and the Texas State Trombone Symposium Competition. She has performed at distinguished festivals and conferences including the International Trombone Festival, Trombonanza (Argentina), the Brazilian Trombone Festival, Slide Factory, Trombontepec (Mexico), and the Big XII Trombone Conference. Her orchestral and chamber performance experience includes appearances with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Monarch Brass, Austin Symphony Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, and Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Velasco currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Trombone at Texas Christian University and Dallas College and is an official performing artist for S.E. Shires Co. She recently earned a Smithsonian Folkways Certificate of Accomplishment in World Music Pedagogy, reflecting her commitment to culturally responsive teaching and global musical perspectives. Her educational philosophy centers on creating inclusive learning environments where students from all backgrounds feel valued, supported, and empowered. Through her teaching and performance, she seeks to celebrate diverse musical traditions and advocate for broader representation within classical music. As a performer, educator, and advocate, Dr. Velasco remains dedicated to expanding opportunities for underrepresented musicians while championing diverse voices within the brass community.
