The former Union Grounds location in the Brown-Lupton University Union is currently
undergoing construction and will be re-opened as a full-service Starbucks in August.
Horned Frogs can expect all the same options that are available at any Starbucks,
including hot and cold food, a full menu of drinks, gift cards and merchandise, as
well as the ability to place mobile orders and earn stars for purchases.
“I think it’s a big value-add for the campus,” Miles Oller, director of facilities
for Student Affairs, said. “We’re continuing to grow and push what’s next. Starbucks
is a nationally recognized brand, a lot of people buy into their food and their product,
and we’ll be able to offer it in a good location in the center of campus.”
Horned Frogs will see some nods to TCU in the interior design, including brick on
the pillars and purple fabric chairs, as well as art with purple accents and some
favorite campus flowers. Several types of mixed seating, including tables, bar tops
and booths, will accommodate about 40 people.
Starbucks will start serving mere months ahead of the forthcoming Market Square remodel,
which will begin following December commencement.
Some of the new Market Square design elements will be similar to the new East End Dining at Gutierrez Hall, with each individual food-serving unit delineated with unique menus. The new Market
Square will also offer to-go options for those who need to grab a quick meal and a
covered patio that can be utilized year round. It is scheduled to take about seven
months and be open for fall 2026.
Oller said that the new Market Square, Gutierrez Hall and expanded Starbucks, as well
as the Amazon cashless market, are all part of an ongoing dining overhaul on campus.
“We’re trying to bring something new to the campus community every year,” he said.
This semester, it will be a tall Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew with extra ice … or
whatever you choose to tell your barista.
