Purple in His Hometown: A Bowl Week Conversation With Horned Frog Anthony Renteria ’91
From Saturday afternoons in Amon G. Carter Stadium to leading one of TCU’s strongest alumni chapters, Anthony Renteria ’91 has lived the Horned Frog experience from every angle.
As president of the San Antonio TCU Alumni Chapter, Renteria has spent the last five years helping alumni stay connected to the university — but his relationship with TCU began long before bowl games and alumni events. It started as a student, shaped by campus traditions, friendships and moments that left a lasting impression.
TCU News sat down with Renteria when the Horned Frogs were in San Antonio for the Valero Alamo Bowl to talk about his time as a student, his favorite football memories, why San Antonio feels like home to so many Horned Frogs and what he would tell prospective students in the region who are considering TCU today.

When you learned TCU was selected for the Alamo Bowl and would be playing in your
hometown, what did that moment mean to you as a Horned Frog?
I was excited knowing TCU has had two incredible Alamo Bowl appearances in the last
10 years. Our Horned Frog resiliency and tenacity have made TCU a favorite of the
San Antonio community.
Take us back to your time as a student at TCU. When you think about your years on
campus, what moment or memory immediately comes to mind?
The sincere and lasting friendships I made during my time at TCU are always the first
memories that come immediately to mind. The time we spent catching a quick bite to
eat at the PIT, hanging out at Brown Lupton Student Center, attending football and
basketball games together, or sitting and enjoying the beautifully kept landscape
on campus. Lifetime friendships started and were cultivated during that time.
Do you have a favorite TCU football memory from your student days — a game, a road
trip or a moment in the stands that still sticks with you?
Two games I remember fondly, first our 33-12 victory over BYU and their legendary
coach, Levell Edwards, in Fort Worth on Sept. 19, 1987. TCU’s Tony Jeffery rushed
for over 200 yards. Secondly, Sept. 23, 1989, in Fort Worth versus Southern Miss and
their highly talented quarterback, Brett Favre. We won that game 19-17, after TCU
recovered a 3rd quarter Favre fumble in the air and returned it to the Southern Miss
9-yard line prior to our final score.
Every Horned Frog has a favorite tradition. What’s yours?
My favorite Horned Frog tradition is singing our Alma Mater regardless of the outcome
of a game. The words to our alma mater come to life once you leave and reflect on
your time at TCU. “…Mem’ries Sweet, Comrades True…Praise to Thee, TCU.”
How did your experience at TCU help shape the path you took after graduation?
My time at TCU was a microcosm of what I would soon experience in the real world.
TCU helped prepare me to press onward, even during times when life didn’t go as I
had planned.
As president of the San Antonio TCU Alumni Chapter, what stands out to you about the
alumni community here?
I’m impressed and overwhelmed with all our alumni, friends and supporters. In particular,
we have such a strong and dedicated group of TCU parents who have been the lifeline
of our San Antonio Alumni Chapter. Their spirit and enthusiasm encourage others to
remain involved and help recruit others to participate.
San Antonio is also one of TCU’s strongest recruitment markets. What would you say
to a student living in San Antonio who’s considering TCU and wondering if it’s the
right fit?
Like San Antonio, Fort Worth is a unique and thriving community that celebrates the
differences in life, culture and people. In fact, Fort Worth reminds me of San Antonio,
and TCU is an incredibly special place where you will learn to find your niche as
well as discover and develop your individual gifts and voice.
Finish this sentence: Once you’re a Horned Frog, you never really stop being one because
…we are a special breed who always discovers ways to survive and succeed regardless
of the obstacles and challenges we encounter. Go Frogs!
