University leadership recently recognized two Horned Frogs for their contributions to the campus community through teaching and mentoring. The awards, given at a private event, are part of TCU’s larger efforts to recognize the ongoing work of faculty and staff across campus and beyond.

Maryrose and Dan Short Award for Teaching Excellence

The winner of the Maryrose and Dan Short Award for Teaching Excellence is Ashley Lakoduk, instructor of biology in the Louise Dilworth Davis College of Science & Engineering.

“In Ashley’s short tenure with TCU, she has become widely recognized for her student-centered pedagogy characterized by intellectual rigor, empathy and a passion for empowering students to think critically, embrace curiosity and connect science to humanity,” said Floyd L. Wormley, Ph.D., provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The Award was established by the late Dan Short, former dean of the Neeley School of Business, in memory of his wife, Maryrose Short. It is specifically focused on exceptional untenured (tenure-track or non-tenure-track), full-time faculty members with five years or less at TCU.

Wassenich Award for Mentoring in the TCU Community

The winner of the Wassenich Award for Mentoring in the TCU Community is Jean Marie Brown, associate professor of professional practice and director of student media journalism in the Bob Schieffer College of Communication.

“Jean Marie Brown is an encourager, a constant and present mentor and a wise and intentional teacher,” said Kathy Cavins-Tull, vice chancellor for student affairs. “She has broad connections, including many with former students who are now leaders in diverse industries.”

Recognizing faculty and staff members who serve as role models, advisors and guides to students, the award was established by Mark and Linda Wassenich to celebrate this defining characteristic of TCU for many generations.
