After identifying an early meteorite, Oscar Monning accumulated one of the largest collections in the country. Today, Monnig is the namesake of TCU’s Monnig Meteorite Gallery. In a recent Texas Highways feature, Rhiannon Mayne, Oscar and Juanita Monnig Endowed Chair of Meteoritics and Planetary Science at TCU, offers insight into his legacy.

“He was definitely one of the most important meteorite collectors of the 20th century,” Mayne said. “Decades from now, people all over the world will get to request samples to study because of him.”

The article explores how Monnig’s lifelong passion for space led to the discovery and curation of thousands of meteorites from around the world and how his gift enables ongoing research and sparks interest for gallery visitors and students alike.
